Job Title: - Assistant Education Officer, Temporary, Part-time

Location: Buckfast Abbey, Buckfast, Devon

Hours of Work: This will be a temporary contract for a maternity cover, part-time of minimum three days per week. Working days to include a Friday

Reporting tothe Education Manager

Salary: £12.90 per hour

Closing date – Midday - Friday 15thOctober 2021.


Buckfast Abbey is home to a Benedictine Community of monks with the Abbey Church and facilities. It has a manufacturing plant, multiple retail outlets, restaurant, a conference centre, Education Department and a broad range of guest accommodation.

The original Abbey was founded on its current site around 1018 and grew into a large flourishing monastic complex with some substantial Guest Halls. 

Main Responsibilities

  • assist the Education Manager and Wellbeing Project Coordinator in day-to-day tasks connected with all aspects of the Abbey’s education work as required. 
  • Focus particularly on those aspects of the Education Department’s work which are aimed at promoting the mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of children.
  • learning and delivering existing programmes to a range of age and ability groups. These programmes cover a wide range of subjects such as history, RE, art, outdoor education, archaeology, citizenship etc.
  • supervising visiting school groups in the Education Centre, running some workshops and preparing education materials in a variety of formats.  
  • assisting with the creation, development and delivery of high-quality educational resources and learning programmes for visitors, schools, families and special interest groups.
  • developing programmes of activities and workshops on the themes of wellbeing.
  • developing programmes of activities and workshops themed for particular events or festivals.
  • office work will include assisting with the administration of bookings and events.

The Buckfast Abbey Education Department is a lively and creative environment with a wide-ranging brief. A wide variety of skills may be appropriate for this post, and you will be encouraged to develop education projects and resources in line with your own interests and talents. However, above all we require a creative person with enthusiasm, passion and curiosity.

You should have good communication and presentation skills and able to work with students, teachers, monks, employees and managers at the Abbey. You will be confident in dealing with the public and addressing groups of people. You will also need written communication skills to produce education resources for a range of audiences

Experience of working in a non-classroom learning environment and an education qualification might be an advantage as would an understanding of the National Curriculum and learning styles. This could be a role for a wellbeing practitioner with teaching or youth work experience. But, above all, a willingness to learn, try new things and work across disciplines is vital.

  • experience of working with children
  • an understanding of the wellbeing needs of children
  • computer literate with the ability to create booklets and educational materials, maintain records and databases, manipulate data, mail merge.
  • good organisational skills that include a flexible approach to tasks with the adaptability to cope with changing situations and last-minute alterations.
  • reliable, self-motivated and with a responsible attitude.
  • effective team player, with the ability to also work alone.
  • an empathy with the Catholic ethos of the site.


  • experience with social media
  • video making skills
  • previous use of video editing programmes such as Adobe Premier Pro and graphics packages such as Coreldraw
  • practical craft skills
  • practical experience in running wellbeing orientated sessions

The post holder will be required to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
