Located at the centre of a picturesque valley on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Buckfast Abbey is home to a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine Monks, who live their lives of prayer, work, and study according to the ancient rule of St Benedict. 

The heart of our site is the Abbey Church and Monastery – the place in which the Monastic Community lives and prays at various times throughout the day. Our site is historic – the original Abbey being founded in 1018 AD.  

Today, our site is a flourishing complex of buildings which the monks have continually developed to aid them in realising their vision for Buckfast - to be a national centre of witness to God, and the Roman Catholic faith. To that end, the community places a great value upon hospitality, and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. 

Our site includes beautiful gardens, a restaurant, multiple retail outlets, a conference centre, and a broad range of guest accommodation. To aid them in operating and maintaining the site, the community employs over a hundred members of staff, and offers a variety of interesting and rewarding career opportunities.

Role Purpose

The Breakfast Chef is responsible for the day-to-day safe preparation and production of food items in the kitchen as directed by the Catering Manager/Head Chef. Ensuring all Breakfast items and cooked buffet are set up to specification as well as routinely maintained and monitored during service.

It will be necessary for all personnel in the kitchen to adhere to food safety practices (HACCP) and undertake required training. Chefs may be required to assist in all kitchens on site.

Main Responsibilities

Duties will include:

•To be responsible for the preparation of food to agreed standards
•To cook food to agreed standards
•To be responsible for chilling and storing food to agreed health and safety standards
•To purchase food and consumables as directed by the Catering Manager/ Head Chef
•To oversee and restock the Breakfast Buffet/and or, cook to order
•To set up the breakfast room prior to service
•To clear down, clean and sanitise as required
•To store any stock on delivery
•To ensure compliance with food safety systems (HACCP) and all record keeping
•To keep up to date with training requirements and attend training when required
•To always maintain good customer service
•To deal sensitively and professionally with customer requests and dietary needs
•Be able to work single and dual shift patterns if required
•Other duties as required by reasonable request

Person Specification - Essential Qualities

•Experience of working in a busy catering environment (preferred) but not vital as train can be given
•Excellent customer service skills
•Ability to work within a team
•Knowledge of food safety in catering
•Knowledge of health and safety procedures
•Attention to detail
•A discreet and confidential manner that reflects a high level of integrity
•Effective organisation skills and the ability to manage time effectively
•An empathy with the Catholic ethos of the site

Person Specification - Desirable qualities
•Quality and experience to NVQ2 or equivalent standard (desirable)
•Driving licence
•Qualifications in health and safety procedures
