Buckfast Abbey is home to a Benedictine Community of monks, who live a life of prayer, study and work in accordance with the rule of St. Benedict. Our site includes beautiful gardens, a restaurant, multiple retail outlets, a conference centre, and a broad range of guest accommodation. We are looking to increase our team with the appointment of 2 full-time cleaners, who will work around the site, ensuring our public service areas are kept clean and sanitised. The Abbey is a beautiful place, and we want to ensure all our facilities are maintained to the best possible standards for those who visit.

On a shift basis and as part of a small team, you will keep the male, female and disabled public toilets around the site in a clean, sanitised and tidy condition.

You will also be asked to undertake other routine cleaning tasks both within the various buildings and covering the grounds used by visitors. Health and safety will be at the forefront of all that you do. The following list is not exhaustive but gives an example of the main duties:

Keeping the conveniences (toilets / sinks) clean and hygienic, including sweeping and washing floors
Ensuring that adequate supplies of consumables, such as soap and toilet rolls, are available.
Reporting faults, as required.
Cleaning windows, glass surfaces
Maintaining and upkeep of all cleaning equipment, supplies, and products, ensuring safe and sanitary storage and care of products
Use cleaning materials and protective clothing and equipment whenever the nature of the work requires them and, in the manner, and for the purpose for which they were manufactured
To report all accidents, incidents and injuries to any persons in the toilets at work, no matter how minor.

Person specification - Essential qualities

Punctual, thorough, efficient and well organised.
Willingness to work outside.
Physical stamina are valued greatly in this job as some lifting will be required.
To be versatile enough to work in several different capacities around the site.
Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities, under direction from the Hospitality Manager, or other designated manger.
A positive attitude is a must and an ability to use initiative.
Polite and courteous to interact with members of the public during site opening times.
The position will require you to work independently (as well as within a team) so self-motivation is very important.

Person Specification – Desirable qualities

Previous experience in cleaning, to know what a very good standard of cleaning looks like
Knowledge of health and safety in the workplace, to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to preserve the health and safety of oneself, members of the public and other Abbey staff. This includes ensuring that warning signs are placed in clearly visible locations, when appropriate
Driving Licence desirable, as there may be times when the postholder will be asked to drive an Abbey vehicle.
An empathy with the Catholic ethos of the site
