Hourly Rate: Salary: £8.93 per hour (aged 18 to 20 yrs) / £10.03 per hour (aged 21 and over) 

Hours of work: Hours based on need, as and when, which may include weekends.  As this is a casual contract, there will be no obligation to accept work offered – this is a fantastic opportunity for those who need true flexibility.

Background

Located at the centre of a picturesque valley on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Buckfast Abbey is home to a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine Monks, who live their lives of prayer, work, and study according to the ancient rule of St Benedict. 

The heart of our site is the Abbey Church and Monastery – the place in which the Monastic Community lives and prays at various times throughout the day. Our site is historic – the original Abbey being founded in 1018 AD. 

Today, our site is a flourishing complex of buildings which the monks have continually developed to aid them in realising their vision for Buckfast - to be a national centre of witness to God, and the Roman Catholic faith. To that end, the community places a great value upon hospitality, and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. 

Our site includes beautiful gardens, a restaurant, multiple retail outlets, a conference centre, and a broad range of guest accommodation. To aid them in operating and maintaining the site, the community employs over a hundred members of staff, and offers a variety of interesting and rewarding career opportunities.

Role purpose

As part of a small, busy team, working under guidance and direction, you will have a range of duties to ensure a high-quality service for our many guests. You will serve food and drink, take table orders, clear tables, assist in the wash up areas and help keep the Hospitality service running smoothly. 

Main Responsibilities

This job description is intended to provide an outline of the key tasks and responsibilities only. There may be other reasonable duties requested of the post holder.

  • Dealing with guests and visitors in a polite and helpful manner, providing excellent customer service
  • Taking table orders, as well as serving food to tables
  • To maintain the food and beverage outlets, public areas, stores, back office, and staff areas in a clean and tidy condition 
  • Cleaning tables, sanitising, wash up duties and disposing of waste
  • Support and helping Chefs in the preparation of food 
  • To deal with any queries/complaints, referring to a supervisor, if necessary
  • Adopting all safety procedures relating to fire and security 
  • Compliance with food safety systems (HACCP) Record keeping, with full training provided if required
  • To portray a positive ‘can always do’ attitude, to both guests, customers, community and colleagues alike
  • To be on-time for shifts and to ensure that sign in procedures are always adhered to

Person Specification – Skills, Personal Qualities and Requirements

  • Previous experience of working in a hotel/catering environment, with customer interaction would be desirable, but support and training will be given if required
  • Have a confident and friendly manner, with a positive approach 
  • Be responsible, honest, and reliable
  • An excellent team player
  • To be versatile and flexible if requested to work in several different capacities around the Abbey buildings
  • Ability to follow instructions and use initiative 
  • An empathy with the Catholic ethos of the site
  • Have a tidy appearance
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures (desirable) 
  • Qualifications in food safety in Catering level 1 and 2 or higher(desirable)
