Job Title: - Housekeeper Permanent

Location: Buckfast Abbey, Devon

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: £8.10 per hour (aged 18 to 20 yrs) / £9.10 per hour (aged 21 and over) 

Hours of Work: Approx. 40 hrs per week, but not guaranteed. 5 day working week to include weekends   

Buckfast Abbey is home to a Benedictine Community of monks, who live a life of prayer, study and work in accordance with the rule of St. Benedict. The Abbey has multiple retail outlets, a newly expanded conference facility, multiple guest accommodation facilities and a popular tea-room “The Grange”. Our main guest accommodation, Northgate House, is a 30-bedroom accommodation facility which adds to our already diverse accommodation options. Hospitality is central to the Benedictine tradition and the Housekeepers are integral to supporting that mission by ensuring that bedrooms and communal areas re cleaned to a very high standard for all guests.


Aim of the role

To be responsible for cleaning the guest rooms and bathrooms and other areas of the accommodation to high standards set by Buckfast Abbey.


Main Responsibilities 

The Housekeeper will be responsible for performing Covid safe deep cleaning and other routine duties in the preparation and servicing of guest rooms and bathrooms. Housekeepers will promote a positive image of the property to guests and must be customer focussed, honest and friendly. They should be able and willing to address guest requests and take appropriate actions to respond to problems. 


Duties will include:

  • To prepare the guest rooms for cleaning.
  • To change and make beds.
  • To dust the room and furniture.
  • To clean the bathrooms, corridors and shared areas such as kitchens and lounges.
  • To clean the closet.
  • To vacuum carpets.
  • To complete checks and secure the rooms.
  • To deliver and retrieve items on loan to guests e.g. iron and ironing boards
  • To ensure the security of guest rooms and the privacy of guests
  • To perform a rotation of cleaning duties (e.g. steam clean carpets, spring cleaning, deep cleaning etc.) as required
  • To be responsible for the replenishment of guest complimentary items and bath supplies. 
  • To be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of the work area.
  • To be responsible for the Abbey property in the work area.
  • To attend to guest calls, guest requests / guest complaints in the area assigned to them.
  • To be responsible for following the standard operating procedures.
  • To be responsible for achieving and exceeding the guest satisfaction.
  • To have a full understanding of the guesthouse’s fire and safety procedures, COSHH to ensure safety of all staff and guests, at all times.

  • Food Hygiene
  • Security

Person Specification – Skills, Personal Qualities and Requirements 

  • Previous housekeeper experience in an hotel style environment,with high levels of customer interaction 
  • Professional attitude
  • An excellent team player
  • Ability to work independently to agreed shift times
  • A discreet and confidential manner that reflects a high level of integrity
  • Effective organisation skills and the ability to manage time effectively. Multi-tasking will be a common occurrence
  • To attend training relevant to the nature of your duties and the organisation
  • Physical mobility and stamina, specifically in relation to the deep cleaning, sanitising and preparation of hotel bedrooms and other accommodation, often to tight deadlines and turnaround times 
  • Ability to follow instructions and use initiative 
  • Attention to detail
  • An empathy with the Catholic ethos of the site
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures desirable
