Job Title: - Kitchen Porter

Location: Buckfast Abbey, Devon

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: £8.10 per hour (aged 18 to 20 yrs) / £9.10 per hour (aged 21 and over) 

Hours of Work: 40 hrs per week.  5 day working week to include weekends   

Closing Date:  Midday Friday 2nd July 2021

 

Buckfast Abbey is home to a Benedictine Community of monks, who live a life of prayer, study and work in accordance with the rule of St. Benedict. The Abbey has multiple retail outlets, a newly expanded conference facility, multiple guest accommodation facilities and a popular tea-room “The Grange”. Our main guest accommodation, Northgate House, is a 30-bedroom accommodation facility which adds to our already diverse accommodation options. 

 

Aim of the role

As a Kitchen Porter, working in any of the kitchens across the Abbey, your key objective is to maintain the highest standard of cleanliness and tidiness, according to current health and food hygiene legislation, at all times.  


Main Responsibilities 

The following list is not exhaustive but gives an example of the main duties expected.

  • Thorough cleaning of designated areas, sweeping and mopping of floors, ensuring that all surfaces are hygienically cleaned as requested. 
  • Cleaning of fridges, shelving, food preparation areas, cupboards and trolleys.
  • Prepare the dishwasher for the days’ use by checking that it is in working order and has sufficient chemicals for the day’s operation.  Report faults or dishwasher cleaning products required.
  • Ensure that all dirty crockery and cutlery is cleared off the service hatch area; wash in the appropriate manner; once cleaned, stack all items safely on the correct shelves or send clean crockery, cutlery and glassware to the appropriate outlet as required by the waiting staff. 
  • Ensure machines and equipment are kept clean and that all cleaning schedules are followed.
  • All rubbish and food waste must be removed and disposed of correctly.


Person specification - Essential qualities

  • Relevant experience in a catering environment. 
  • An effective team player.
  • Basic Food Hygiene Certificate.
  • Knowledge of handling and operation of equipment.
  • Working knowledge of health and safety procedures.
  • Attention to detail. 
  • An empathy with the Catholic ethos of the site.


Person Specification – Desirable qualities

  • Intermediate/Advanced Food Hygiene qualification.
