Job Title: - Seasonal Food and Beverage Assistant

Location: Buckfast Abbey, Devon

Contract Type: Fixed Term until 30th September 2022, with potential for permanent.

Salary: £8.51 per hour (aged 18 to 20 yrs) / £9.56 per hour (aged 21 and over)

Hours of Work: 20 per week, but not guaranteed. 5 day working week to include weekends and evenings.

Background

Located at the centre of a picturesque valley on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Buckfast Abbey is home to a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine Monks, who live their lives of prayer, work, and study according to the ancient rule of St Benedict. 

The heart of our site is the Abbey Church and Monastery – the place in which the Monastic Community lives and prays at various times throughout the day. Our site is historic – the original Abbey being founded in 1018 AD. 

Today, our site is a flourishing complex of buildings which the monks have continually developed to aid them in realising their vision for Buckfast - to be a national centre of witness to God, and the Roman Catholic faith. To that end, the community places a great value upon hospitality, and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. 

Our site includes beautiful gardens, a restaurant, multiple retail outlets, a conference centre, and a broad range of guest accommodation. To aid them in operating and maintaining the site, the community employs over a hundred members of staff, and offers a variety of interesting and rewarding career opportunities.

 

Purpose of the role

As part of a small, busy team and working under guidance and direction, Food and Beverage assistants have a range of duties. They work together to ensure a high-quality service, are welcoming and attentive to guests, serve food and drink, take table orders, clear tables, assist in the wash up areas and help keep the Hospitality service running smoothly. The Food and Beverage Assistant, whilst based in Northgate Hotel, could be asked to work in other hospitality areas of the Abbey, to include The Grange and The Conference Centre, based on visitor/guest demand and resourcing needs. 

 

Main Responsibilities

  • Dealing with guests and visitors in a polite and helpful manner, providing excellent customer service
  • To deal with any queries/complaints, referring to a Team Leader if necessary
  • Taking table orders, as well as serving food to tables
  • Taking payments for food and drink, processing transactions through the till
  • To ensure that all monies are kept in a safe and secure area adopting the cash handling procedures
  • Overseeing and re-stocking counters
  • To operate the bar and restaurant to the agreed standards
  • To maintain the food and beverage outlets, public areas, stores, back office and staff areas in a clean and tidy condition 
  • Cleaning tables, sanitising, wash up duties and disposing of waste
  • To ensure that handover procedures are followed, by reviewing and recording in the daily log, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to resolve any outstanding issues
  • Adopting all safety procedures relating to fire and security (full training will be provided during employment).
  • Compliance with food safety systems (HACCP) Record keeping
  • To communicate professionally and clearly with other departments and the community of Monks as appropriate
  • To portray a positive ‘can do’ attitude at all times, to both guests, customers, community and colleagues alike
  • To carry out any other ad hoc duties as requested
  • To attend training meetings and departmental meetings as requested
  • Be flexible and co-operative with work schedules, to ensure an uninterrupted service
  • To be on-time for all shifts and to ensure that sign in procedures are always adhered to 
  • To ensure a high standard of personal hygiene and presentation, wearing the full uniform and ID badge provided when on duty



Person Specification – Skills, Personal Qualities and Requirements

  • Previous experience of working in a hotel/catering environment, with high levels of customer interaction 
  • Professional attitude
  • An excellent team player
  • Ability to work independently to agreed shift times
  • Effective organisation skills and the ability to manage time effectively. Multi-tasking will be a common occurrence
  • To attend training relevant to the nature of your duties and the organisation
  • To be versatile and flexible if requested to work in a number of different capacities around the Abbey buildings
  • Ability to follow instructions and use initiative 
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures (desirable). 
  • Attention to detail
  • An empathy with the Catholic ethos of the site
