Job Title: - Security Officer - Mainly Nights

Location: Buckfast Abbey, Devon

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: £10.00 per hour

Hours of Work: 4 x 10 hour shifts per week, on a rota basis, which will mainly be nights, with the potential for occasional day shifts.

Closing Date: Midday on Monday 14th June 2021


BACKGROUND

Buckfast Abbey is home to a Benedictine Community of monks with the Abbey Church and facilities. It has a manufacturing plant, multiple retail outlets, restaurant, a conference centre, education department and a broad range of guest accommodation.

The original Abbey was founded on its current site around 1018 and grew into a large flourishing monastic complex with some substantial Guest Halls.


MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE

To secure all aspects of a working life monastery and work with the community to protect both the staff and contractors working on the premises and also the visitors and guests entering the buildings as it develops. Specifically, to provide a consistent service, with day-to-day responsibilities including:

•Security patrols of the Buckfast Abbey site by foot and also by vehicle due to the size of the site, inclusive of public highways

•Presenting at all times a smart, alert, visible and commanding security presence

•Access control and securing premises

•Reporting any security events and dealing with emergency situations, including initial alerts and evacuations in accordance with site procedures

•Responsible for all matters of health and safety on site overnight

•Reporting any reactive jobs and faults via internal reporting systems

•Operate phones, e-mails, IT systems, CCTV, alarms and doors

•Spot and stop all suspicious sightings or potential criminal activity and retain full control until the arrival of relevant emergency services

•Working closely with the Northgate Hotel Night Porter to provide each other with support as and when required

•Traffic / car park management

•Understand your responsibility in reporting any unacceptable behaviour / safeguarding issues in a confidential, timely manner and complying with Buckfast Abbey policies and procedures as required

•Proactively following lone working protocols on every shift and in line with applicable risk assessments and any occupational health guidance

•Any other duties commensurate with the post.


PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Requirements

•Demonstrable security experience and an active SIA licence

•The ability to drive Buckfast Abbey vehicles, including a full clean licence to take these onto the public highway

•Ability to undertake weekend working overnight

•Ability to thoroughly investigate security issues within any site building, including the access of different floors via stairs where appropriate

•Supportive and empathetic to Buckfast Abbey’s ethos of being a place of community

•A confident communicator, who has both excellent written and interpersonal skills, with the ability to write e-mails, complete standard forms and liaise with colleagues accordingly

•A collaborative team player

•Ability to remain calm in demanding / emergency situations

•Driven to provide a consistent friendly and professional service at all times

•Adaptable, flexible, with good organisational and time management skills

•A good IT knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel and the internet

•Comfortable lone working independently with minimal supervision and be a decisive thinker

•Willingness to undertake regular First Aid training

•A resolutions based focus when dealing with potential conflict

•An understanding of the Health & Safety at Work Act, relevant Criminal, Civil Law and Police and Criminal Evidence Act


DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

Desirable Requirements

•A CCTV licence would be an advantage, but training can be provided

•A knowledge and understanding of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults

•Ideally live within appropriate commuting distance of the Abbey.
