Location: Buckfast Abbey, Devon

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: £11.97 per hour

Hours of Work: 40 hrs per week. Mainly straight shifts / 5 day working week to include weekends, evenings and breakfast shifts.  


Buckfast Abbey is home to a Benedictine Community of monks, who live a life of prayer, study and work in accordance with the rule of St. Benedict. The Abbey has multiple retail outlets, a newly expanded conference facility, multiple guest accommodation facilities and a popular tea-room “The Grange”. Our main guest accommodation, Northgate House, is a 30-bedroom accommodation facility which adds to our already diverse accommodation options.Hospitality is central to the Benedictine tradition and the team of Chefs work in various kitchens across the Abbey. 


Main Responsibilities

The Chef is responsible for the day- to-day safe preparation and production of food items as directed by the Catering Manager, ensuring all menu items and cooked meals are set up to specification, as well as routinely maintained and monitored during service. It will be necessary for all personnel in the kitchen to adhere to food safety practices (HACCP) and undertake required training. Chefs may be required to assist in all kitchens on site.


Duties will include:

  • To be responsible for the preparation of food to agreed standards
  • To cook food to agreed standards
  • To be responsible for chilling and storing food to agreed health and safety standards
  • To purchase food and consumables as directed
  • To oversee and restock the menu Items
  • To clear down, clean and sanitise as required
  • To manage good stock control
  • To ensure compliance with food safety systems (HACCP) record keeping
  • To keep up to date with training requirements and attend training when required
  • To maintain good customer service at all times
  • To deal sensitively and professionally with customer requests and dietary needs
  • Be able to work single and dual shift patterns if required
  • Other duties as required by reasonable request


Person specification - Essential qualities

  • Experience as a Chef, working in a busy catering environment
  • Knowledge of food safety in catering 
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work within a team
  • A discreet and confidential manner that reflects a high level of integrity
  • Effective organisation skills and the ability to manage time effectively
  • An empathy with the Catholic ethos of the site

Person Specification – Desirable qualities

  • Quality and experience to NVQ2 or equivalent standard (desirable)
  • Qualifications in health and safety procedures
