Buckfast Abbey is home to a Benedictine Community of monks with the Abbey Church and facilities. It has a manufacturing plant, multiple retail outlets, restaurant, a conference centre, education department and a broad range of guest accommodation.

The original Abbey was founded on its current site around 1018 and grew into a large flourishing monastic complex with some substantial Guest Halls.

Main Purpose of the Role

As a member of the Works Team, this role will support the Buildings & Maintenance Manager to co-ordinate a seamless and efficient service, ensuring that the standards of Buckfast Abbey are met. Specifically, to provide a consistent service, with day-to-day responsibilities including:

• Assist the Buildings & Maintenance Manager in the day-to-day supervision of staff.
• To work flexibly and on a mobile basis across the Buckfast Abbey site.
• Assist in the surveying of works, preparation of estimates and allocation of works.
• Support the management of stores and material supplies as appropriate for effective workflow. Inclusive of assessing material requirements, applying specified work values and buying-in of materials.
• Ensure the observation of relevant safety regulations and other legislation.
• Provide technical trades advice as required.
• Liaise with customer departments on matters relating to works within their areas.
• Responsible for keeping work areas tidy and free from waste materials.
• Load / unload materials / stores.
• Check, record and maintain machinery / power tools including liaison with service engineers.
• Competently quality assure works undertaken by the various trades within the Works Department.
• Check any manufactured items are safe and within specified guidelines.
• Ensure the safety and security of the workshops and other Works areas at the end of every working day.
• Read drawings and take information from specifications, schedules, manufacturers guides etc.
• Work collaboratively with the Health and Safety Officer and to Buckfast Abbey’s Health and Safety Policy.
• To oversee all duties of the trades operating within the Works Department, including the monitoring and management of workflows.
• Be a key point of contact and information exchange for the Works Department.
• Responsibility to overseeing Cleaner / Maintenance Operatives tasks including the cleaning of drains etc.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

• Considerable tradesperson experience, inclusive of surveying and buying materials.
• Ability to read and interpret technical trades information.
• Demonstrable experience of carrying out administrative tasks.
• Ability to plan and organise workloads for a team of tradespeople with excellent attention to detail.
• Ability to mentor and coach tradespeople as required e.g. apprentices.
• Ability to work on own initiative to meet targets and deadlines and to operate within a set budget.
• Good written and oral communication skills, including the record and report on works.
• Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, staff and other organisations, such as suppliers.
• Commitment to a high standard of service delivery.
• Ability to work flexible hours as the needs of the service dictate, including out of normal hours if required.
• Computer literate or the ability to be trained in the use of Outlook, Excel, Trello etc.
• The ability to oversee / undertake multi-skilled trades tasks.
• Ability to work to all Buckfast Abbey policies and procedures and to live and breathe the culture of community.

• Full driving licence and the ability to drive Buckfast Abbey vehicles and comply with the requirements of the Abbey’s insurers.
• NVQ 3 or equivalent in a relevant trade.
• Ability to carry out manual handling operations, including working at heights e.g. steps, ladders and scaffold.
• Good understanding of health and safety at work, including demonstrable experience of conducting risk assessments for the workplace and work activities.
• Commitment to dealing with issues sensitively, discreetly and confidentially.
• Able to work in a fast paced environment.

Desirable Requirements

• IOSH qualified.
• Demonstrable supervisory experience.
• Ideally live within appropriate commuting distance of the Abbey.
• Understanding of AutoCAD.
