Grand-Orgue Recital: Charles Maxtone-Smith

Saturday 12th October, 19:30

Charles Maxtone-Smith makes his debut recital as Organist of Buckfast Abbey. The first half will include works of Bach and of the French Baroque, as well as 20th century masterpieces, such as Messiaen’s slow and majestic Apparition de l’église éternelle and Gaston Litaize’s colourful and virtuosic Prélude et Danse Fuguée. The recital closes with Liszt’s Fantasia and Fugue on the chorale “Ad nos, ad salutarem undam”, based on a melody from Meyerbeer’s Le Prophète, and makes use of many tonal resources of the Abbey’s splendid Ruffatti organ.
