Fr Abbot blesses over 100 trees for Queen’s Green Canopy

Last month, Fr Abbot blessed over 100 trees which were planted earlier in the year as part of the Abbey’s contribution to the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative. The special ceremony which was held on 19th May was just one of the ways the Abbey marked Her Majesty’s remarkable milestone.

Head Groundsman Peter Hague organised the planting of the trees - namely Elder, Hawthorn, English Oak, Hazel, Cherry, Crab Apple, Grey Willow and Field Maple, with help from the Mini Vinnies of St Mary’s School. Over time these will be complemented by a band of wildflowers that will follow the hedgerow. Field Poppy, California Poppy, Cornflower, Blue Looping, Black Medic and Red Clover are just some of the flowers that were planted on the day.

Aaron Bray, Estate Manager, commented: "We are delighted to have been part of Her Majesty's Green Canopy Campaign, sustainable stewardship of the natural environment is important to the Benedictine way of life. It's fabulous to see the children from St Mary's Primary school getting involved too.”
