Buckfast Abbey fish pass shortlisted for People’s Choice Award in the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards 2022

Buckfast Abbey is delighted to announce that its new, state-of-the-art fish pass has been shortlisted for a People’s Choice Award in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West Civil Engineering Awards 2022.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West Civil Engineering Awards 2022 is held in association with Kier BAM to showcase the collective and individual achievements of civil engineers and civil engineering in the region.

We’re humbled that the project has been recognised among so many other outstanding civil engineering schemes, making the shortlist for this year’s People’s Choice Award.

Funded by the Abbey and supported by a partnership grant of just under £100,000 from the Environment Agency, the Larinier fish pass was installed to facilitate the upstream migration of salmon and sea trout, which can often be inhibited by manmade structures such as weirs and dams. This new structure replaced the historic, failing Victorian pool pass at the Abbey, which had been damaged in periods of high water flows in 2020.

Since its installation in September 2021, the fish pass has been helping to turn the tide on the River Dart’s diminishing salmon population, and in turn enhancing biodiversity and improving opportunities for angling and ecotourism.

As part of the project, the Abbey also completed improvement works on a 200m stretch of riverside path to remove trip hazards and enable easier access for mobility vehicles. We’re pleased to see this having a beneficial impact on the nearby community including all local anglers and residents who frequently visit the River Dart.

We’re exceptionally proud of this civil engineering project which is addressing one of the last remaining barriers impacting the River Dart’s ailing salmon populationand is entirely in keeping with our Monastic Community’s commitment to caring for the environment.
