Sustainability is a central theme across the different aspects of life here at Buckfast Abbey, which is why we were delighted to learn our recent project with the Environment Agency and Westcountry Rivers Trust had been shortlisted in the ICE South West Civil Engineering awards 2022 for a People’s Choice Award. Thank you to everyone who voted for our project. Fingers crossed for when the winners are announced on 15th September!
Our new, state-of-the-art Lanier fish pass replaced a historic, failing Victorian pool pass here at the Abbey, which is helping to turn the tide on diminishing Salmon populations by enabling them to migrate upstream and access spawning grounds.
The installation of a better way to help salmon, sea trout and eel pass upriver, is entirely in keeping with our Community’s commitment to caring for the environment. Our hope is that this will aid the recovery of the salmon population on the River Dart for future generations to enjoy. Learn more about the project here.
