An Evening with Terry Waite CBE

An Evening with Terry Waite CBE

Sat 9th June 7.00pm | £10

Terry Waite CBE has had a varied career. He has worked in most troubled spots of the world and has been an advisor to both the Anglican Archbishop of Uganda as well as the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie. Much of his life has been spent in the dangerous work of negotiating for the release of hostages and he was successful in obtaining the release of individuals held by General Amin, Golonel Ghadaffi, Iranian Revolutionary Guards and Hezabolla in Lebanon. It was in Beirut that he was captured and spent almost five years in strict solitary confinement.

In his lecture he will discuss his experiences and describe how he survived a situation of extreme deprivation. He will also reflect on how some of the insights gained during those years have helped him in his work today. He will illustrate his talk by some brief readings from one of his books, ’Out of the Silence’.

Today, apart from writing, Terry Waite is active in work for the Homeless through Emmaus of which he is President. He works with Hostages through Hostage UK of which he was a joint founder and YCare, again, an organization which he helped found and which enables young people in deprived areas of the world to get employment.
