Woodland Hero Award Finalist

Aaron Bray, Director of Estates at Buckfast Abbey with Fr Michael

Celebrating Aaron Bray: A Finalist for the Woodland Hero Award in 2024’s South West Farmer Awards

We are thrilled to announce that Aaron Bray, Director of Estates – our dedicated steward of sustainability – has been nominated as a finalist for the prestigious Woodland Hero Award in the 2024 South West Farmer Awards. Aaron’s nomination shines a spotlight on his relentless commitment to enhancing biodiversity and fostering regenerative practices, transforming Buckfast Abbey into a thriving ecosystem. Here’s a closer look at how Aaron’s efforts are creating a lasting impact on our land and setting new standards for sustainability.

Planting the Seeds of a Greener Tomorrow
Since joining our team just over four years ago, Aaron has overseen the planting of over 3,000 trees, adding a rich diversity of species to our woodlands. This winter, an additional 500 trees will be planted to enhance the Abbey’s biodiversity, and to bolster habitats for wildlife – especially our precious bee population. Aaron’s strategic selection of tree species is carefully curated to support nature’s recovery, providing essential resources for local pollinators, small mammals, and other woodland creatures.

A Haven for Birds and Wildlife
In collaboration with Fr Michael of St Gregory’s Community, Aaron has constructed over 60 bird boxes and a series of owl boxes to welcome feathered friends to our woodlands. The early signs of occupancy are promising, suggesting these efforts are already making a tangible difference. Next on the agenda are specialised dormouse boxes, which will further support species that rely on our estate’s habitat.

Responsible Woodland Management
Aaron’s vision for sustainable forest management extends beyond planting. His ongoing efforts in forestry management and tree thinning are geared toward encouraging natural regeneration and making use of resources with minimal waste. Fallen trees and trimmed branches are repurposed into materials for fencing and gates, highlighting a circular approach that minimises waste and environmental impact.

Regenerative Farming for a Balanced Ecosystem
One of the most exciting aspects of Aaron’s work is his innovative use of animals for forest clearing – a natural and eco-friendly way to manage vegetation. This regenerative farming practice not only helps manage overgrowth, but also enriches the soil, creating a healthier environment for new growth. It’s a prime example of how we’re striving to blend traditional techniques with modern sustainability practices.

A Future Rooted in Sustainability: Carbon Credits and Organic Soil
Looking ahead, Buckfast Abbey is also gearing up to participate in woodland carbon credit programmes. This initiative will allow businesses and individuals to contribute to the preservation of our woodlands by offsetting their carbon footprints. Our dedication to these sustainability efforts reflects a commitment to not only preserving our estate, but also contributing positively to the global environment.

In 2025, we aim to achieve organic soil status on our farmland – a goal we’re eagerly working toward as it represents the culmination of our team’s diligent efforts in regenerative farming. This milestone will signify that our soils are not only fertile, but free from synthetic inputs, providing a sustainable foundation for generations to come.

A Heartfelt Congratulations to Our Woodland Hero
Aaron’s nomination for the Woodland Hero Award reflects the impact of his work at Buckfast Abbey. His commitment to ecological integrity and sustainable practices is an inspiration, and we’re incredibly proud of this well-deserved recognition.

As we celebrate his nomination, we also renew our mission of fostering sustainability, biodiversity, and responsible stewardship of our land for future generations. Congratulations, Aaron!
