Job Title: - Chef

Salary: £8.75 per hour (other rates apply for those under 21 years of age)

Hours of Work: 5 day working week to include weekends, evenings and occasional breakfast shifts

Responsible to: Accommodation Manager/ Duty Manager 


Buckfast Abbey is home to a Benedictine Community, a manufacturing plant, multiple retail outlets, conference facility and multiple guest accommodation facilities.


Our latest guest accommodation Northgate House is a 30-bedroom accommodation facility which adds to our already diverse guest accommodation options. Hospitality is central to the Benedictine tradition and the Chef is integral to supporting that mission by providing meals that are of a very high standard for all guests.


The Chef is responsible for the day to day safe preparation and production of food items in the kitchen as directed by the Accommodation Manager/Supervisor. Ensuring all Menu items and cooked buffet meals are set up to specification as well as routinely maintained and monitored during service.

It will be necessary for all personnel in the kitchen to adhere to food safety practices (HACCP) and undertake required training. Chefs may be required to assist in all kitchens on site.

Duties will include:

To be responsible for the preparation of food to agreed standards

To cook food to agreed standards

To be responsible for chilling and storing food to agreed health and safety standards

To purchase food and consumables as directed by the Accommodation Manager/Supervisor

To oversee and restock the menu items

To clear down, clean and sanitise as required

To manage good stock control

To ensure compliance with food safety systems (HACCP) record keeping

To keep up to date with training requirements and attend training when required

To maintain good customer service at all times

To deal sensitively and professionally with customer requests and dietary needs

Be able to work single and dual shift patterns if required

Other duties as required by reasonable request


Experience of working in a busy catering environment

Excellent customer service skills

Ability to work within a team

Knowledge of food safety in catering

Knowledge of health and safety procedures

Attention to detail

A discreet and confidential manner that reflects a high level of integrity

Effective organisation skills and the ability to manage time effectively

An empathy with the Catholic ethos of the site


Quality and experience to NVQ2 or equivalent standard

Full clean driving licence

Qualifications in health and safety procedures
