Louis Vierne’s Cinquième Symphonie was given its premiere performance 100 years ago, in New York, on 21 December 1925. A remarkable work, filled with anguish and torment evoking both the composer’s tragic personal circumstances and the follies of World War One, the cyclical symphony is a masterpiece by Vierne, the organist of Notre-Dame de Paris from 1900 until his death in 1937.
The recital, which follows Vespers sung by the Abbey Choir, will last around 45 minutes and is proceeded by a brief pre-concert talk to introduce the work.
