Marriage is anything but mundane; ‘marriage and the family are rooted in the inmost nucleus of the truth about man and his destiny. Sacred Scripture reveals that the vocation to love is part of the authentic image of God which the Creator has desired to impress upon his creature, calling them to resemble him precisely to the extent in which they are open to love’ (Pope Benedict XVI). The marriage relationship between a man and a woman reflects who God is and what redemption is. It is a testimony to love. It is prophetic evangelism. In the words of St John Paul II, ‘Spouses are therefore the permanent reminder to the Church of what happened on the Cross… witnesses to the salvation in which the sacrament makes them sharers. Of this salvation event marriage, like every sacrament, is a memorial, actuation and prophecy.’
