Are you a calm, creative and confident Sous Chef ready to help lead a talented kitchen team in one of Devon’s most distinctive hospitality settings? We are looking for an experienced Sous Chef to join our team, primarily based at San Benedetto’s, our Italian-inspired restaurant within Northgate House Hotel.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who takes pride in high-quality food, thoughtful service and running a smooth, well-organised kitchen. You will report to and support the Head Chef, contribute to menu development, motivate and inspire colleagues and help deliver a memorable dining experience for hotel guests, visitors and local diners.

Why join us?

Hospitality is at the heart of what we do. Our team is passionate about creating welcoming, high-quality experiences for every guest, whether they are staying at Northgate House Hotel, dining at San Benedetto’s or visiting the wider Abbey site.

About the Role

As Sous Chef, you will play a key part in delivering consistently excellent food and service. You will work closely with the Executive Head Chef and Head Chef to develop menus, maintain high kitchen standards, support the wider hospitality operation and help lead the team through busy services with confidence and care.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working with the Executive Head Chef and Head Chef to create and develop menus and new ideas
  • Preparing and presenting high-quality food with consistency, care and attention to detail
  • Helping to lead the kitchen team during service, setting the tone through calm, positive leadership
  • Maintaining excellent standards of cleanliness, food hygiene, health and safety, COSHH and fire safety
  • Managing stock levels, supporting regular stock checks and helping to minimise waste
  • Liaising with accommodation and hospitality colleagues to ensure guests receive excellent service
  • Keeping kitchen documentation up to date and ensuring procedures are followed
  • Overseeing the team under the direction of the Head Chef and deputising when required
  • Supporting training, skills development, rota planning and smooth day-to-day kitchen operations

About you

  • Experienced at Sous Chef level, with a strong record of working consistently to high standards
  • Qualified to at least NVQ Level 2, or equivalent, with a minimum Level 2 food hygiene certificate
  • Passionate about excellent food, warm hospitality and memorable guest experiences
  • Calm under pressure, organised, reliable and able to make considered decisions during busy services
  • A positive team player who leads by example, communicates clearly and delegates effectively
  • Professional, flexible and attentive to customer needs, including dietary requirements
  • Focused on health, safety, environmental awareness, cost control and reducing waste
  • Aligned with our values of Respect, Integrity and Excellence, with empathy for the Catholic ethos of the site
  • A driving licence would be desirable

Ready to bring your skills to a kitchen with character? If you are a thoughtful, motivated Sous Chef who enjoys leading others, developing great food and contributing to a welcoming guest experience, we would love to hear from you!

Ready to roll? So are we! We’re looking to fill this role as soon as possible so please don’t delay in applying to avoid disappointment.
