Education Department

Introduction

Take Learning Beyond the Classroom
Bring the curriculum to life at Buckfast Abbey, where pupils explore learning in a vibrant and meaningful setting. Founded in 1985, the Education Department was established to welcome schools and organised groups to the site. Educational visits and group programmes have since become an important part of life at the Abbey, offering rich opportunities for first-hand learning.

Our curriculum-linked sessions cover RE, History, Art, Geography, Sociology, and PSHE (including Relationships and Health Education), helping pupils deepen their understanding through direct exploration and active engagement.

Through enquiry-based activities and guided exploration of the Abbey and its surroundings, pupils develop religious literacy, historical insight, and critical thinking skills. They experience faith as it is lived today and take part in meaningful discussion that strengthens oracy, encourages reflection, and supports personal development.

We welcome learners of all ages and abilities. Day visits and residential stays at Grangehurst House are available, with structured programmes tailored to your group. For further details, please contact education@buckfast.org.uk.
Financial support may be available to help with the cost of your visit through Hyundai’s Great British School Trip bursary scheme.
