Buckfast Abbey

Buckfast Abbey

Nestled in the shadow of Dartmoor, in a beautiful wooded valley beside the river Dart, Buckfast Abbey offers visitors a tranquil refuge from the hectic pace of everyday life. The Abbey is a working monastery where a community of Benedictine monks live self-sufficiently, welcoming visitors from all around the world.

At the heart of the site is the Abbey Church, a spiritual haven for the many thousands of visitors who come each year. There is an overwhelming sense of peace as soon as you enter the grounds with the church surrounded by gardens which in the summer come alive with colour.

Within the Abbey precinct, visitors can browse in the Bookshop or visit the Monastic Shop which has an extraordinary array of products made by nuns and monks across Europe. There is also a gift shop and information point by the Westgate entrance.

In the Grange Restaurant, you can relax and enjoy tea and homemade cakes or choose from a range of hot meals and light snacks which are changed daily.

Escape for a while at Buckfast – worlds away from the busy rush of the everyday and just a few minutes from the A38.

Abbey Shops

Welcome to the Buckfast Abbey Shops. Located directly opposite the Abbey, we have three departments from which to choose.

Our award winning Monastic Produce Shop sells items made by monks and nuns in Europe and beyond. This includes a large range of Trappist Beers, wines from Austria, jams, honeys, toiletries, cards, candles, icons and statues. We also sell fudge made on site by our own monks. These Monastic items make unusual gifts or treats. Our mission is to support and promote other monastic communities and we welcome you to help us in this.

Our Book Shop has a wide range of religious books as well as Local Interest, Fiction, Poetry and General Interest. We also stock a very large selection of Greetings Cards for many occasions. We are a supplier of resources to Churches and Schools. We sell and redeem National Book Tokens.

Our Gift Shop has gifts for many religious celebrations including Baptisms and Christenings, First Holy Communion and Weddings. We also sell crucifixes, crosses, rosaries and other repository goods, together with religious and non religious jewellery, greetings cards, toys and souvenirs.

We sell Gift Vouchers which can be redeemed exclusively in these shops and a Mail Order service is available, (excluding items restricted by Royal Mail regulations.) With a large, free car park on site, peaceful surroundings and onsite tea rooms, we make an ideal alternative to the bustle of the High Streets.

Buckfast Abbey is a member of the Cathedral and Church Shops Association (CCSA).

Directions and Parking / Dogs

There is free parking available all day at Buckfast Abbey, with lots of spaces for coaches. Overnight parking is not permitted - there are plenty of pleasant camping/caravaning sites in the local area.

Only Assistance dogs are allowed on our grounds. Sadly, this is due to the selfish behaviour of a minority of dog owners in the past. There are some pleasant places nearby in Buckfastleigh and Hembury Woods to walk your dog.

There are 3 sets of public toilets (including disabled) available around the Abbey grounds, by the coach park, lavender garden and Grange Restaurant.

External First Aid cover is provided for visitors through the day. The First Aid room is located under the Grange Restaurant, beside the toilets. First Aid kits are kept in various locations around the site.

There are many other places to visit locally, such as the South Devon Railway, Butterfly & Otter sanctuary and Pennywell Farm. Buckfastleigh town is just a few minutes away and Ashburton a 5 minute drive, both, well worth a visit. If you are on holiday in the area and looking for other days out, we would recommend you using the 'Devon Association of Tourist Attractions' site, of which we are a member: devonstopattractions.com
